Most young children live in the present, the NOW. They don’t yet have the concept of time and therefore are present perfect. Fully engaging in whatever their senses are experiencing be they bubbles, sand, sunlight, flowers, baths or yummy food, they notice. They feel the textures, see the way the light reflects, feel the splash.
As we get older the past and the future can creep in. Memories of mistakes, humiliating comments from others, reprimands for innocent actions can color our minds’ eye as we seek to run from or learn from the past to protect ourselves in the future.Awareness of work yet to be done, unfinished responsibilities or planning the path to care for others can weigh us down as we set our sights on the not yet. In these moments we miss what IS.
This becoming cloaked in our past and the worries of the future can seem normal. However, we CAN choose a different path. This month, let’s look at the ways our spirit and our energy can be sapped, drained or hidden and discover beautiful tools to continue growing while re-establishing the wholeness, purity and vibrancy of our God-given child-like energy.
Pull out a piece of paper and for 5 minutes list things that make you feel like a child again—that energy of pure joy, trust, wonder, fun, and being in the present moment. How did it feel just to write that down? If you are artistically inclined, consider taking that list or some aspect of it and drawing a representation that evokes that feeling in you. Looking at that list, what is one thing you can easily do or bring into your life TODAY that restores your soul and brings you joy?
